I've just started taking 15mg of zinc gluconanate a day to keep my skin under control and my skin is looking better, but this morning i woke up with hair all over my pillow which has never happened before. Should i decrease my dosage? What is a safe amount to take?Does zinc cause hair loss?
Deficiency in zinc can contribute a lot to hair shedding because without zinc and other related minerals, you hair shafts get weakened, causing hair breakage and very slow hair regrowth. Zinc benefits for hair include promotion of cell reproduction, tissue growth and repair of broken tissues. It also maintains the oil-secreting glands that are attached to your hair follicles, thus decreasing their chances of falling off.Does zinc cause hair loss?
I have to start by saying there is no possible case or medical advantage in taking a zinc supplement unless of course you have a zinc deficiency! Too much zinc will likely interfere with the metabolism and absorption of other essential minerals in your body, most especially iron, magnesium and copper. Stomach upset, heartburn and nausea can also occur. Rare side effects have also been reported and these include fever, sore throat, mouth sores, weakness and fatigue. I could however find no reference to hair loss.
My advice is stop the supplement anyway.
The strong metallic taste in your mouth is cased by taking vitamin and vitamin supplements. Zinc DEFICIENCY can cause hair loss but as far as I am aware, taking Zinc should not cause hair loss. It could be coincidence.
Zinc toxicity would not happen with taking just 15mg per day. The UK recommended Zinc intake ranges are 5.5-9.5 mg/day for males and 4.0-7.0 mg/day for females. Up to 50mg (including supplements and Zinc obtained from diet) a day of Zinc is considered safe so you are not taking too much.
Decrease your dosage. In small amounts zinc actually keeps hair healthy, but 15mg is quite a lot as you'll probabilly get what you need from your normal diet. I couldn't tell you how much to take as it varies from peoron to person due to things like age, gender, whetever the peron is breastfeeding/pregnant/planning to conceive etc.
:]
Considering that you're not taking too much zinc (15mg is the daily requirement), you hair loss is due to something else. It could be hereditary. Is/was your father bald?
I believe zinc has been used in alote of hair shampoos for a while so i don't think it does.
Try lowering the mg you take.
Zinc is good for your hair. Its something else.
