My daughter is 18 weeks old and I have been breastfeeding exclusively and I'm still taking the prenatal vitamins. Lately, over the past few weeks my hair just doesn't seem to stop falling out. I always shed a little when the spring turns to summer but this seems excessive. Should I worry? Because I am! Does anyone out there know?Does breast feeding cause hair loss?
While you are pregnant, the body sheds less hair. In the first few weeks of breastfeeding, the body also hangs on to the hair a little longer than usual. What you are experiencing is your body catching up with its normal hair loss. With the pregnancy build-up and the normal spring hair loss, it will seem like you will be bald in a week! You won't. Wash and condition well and comb thoroughly and if its still making you crazy, talk to the doctor.Does breast feeding cause hair loss?
As the others replied, it's the postpartum hormonal shift that is responsible, not breastfeeding.
Nurse away! :)
Breastfeedng does not cause your hair to fall. When your pregnant your hair goes into rest mode in which very little hair falls out. Once you have the baby and your hormones start to go back to normal all that hair that was resting falls out in chunks. I'm going through the same thing (my son is 19 weeks old) but it does get better on it's own. I've also heard that you can help it along by giving your hair a couple of good brushes a day. Try not to worry as this is normal. Congratulations!
I am glad you asked that question. My daughter is 10 weeks old and breastfeeding exclusively also. I also noticed that I am loosing a lot of hair too. I was starting to get a bit concerned too.
after having a baby(6 months or so) yuo will lose ALOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT…
of hair.i thought i was going to have none
It is good that you are still taking your prenatal vitamins, but it does sound like you are lacking in vitamins. Stress and tiredness will also cause this. Even when I am not pregnant or feeding my hair does this at times. Keep up with your vitamins and be sure to take in more calcium and iron as well.
Breast feeding does not cause hair loss. Having a baby causes hair loss (but not really). Did you notice how during your pregnancy our hair got really thick and grew well? After pregnancy it stops doing that and sometimes it seems like a lot is coming out, but I think it is just returning to normal. My hair was fantastic while I was pregnant and I, too, have returned to my previous state of thin hair.
no
It's your ever changing hormones. It's normal. While you are pregnant your body slows down and this makes your hair appear to grow faster because less of it is falling out (everything is slowed down - the normal falling out) so when your hormones switch to post-pregnancy everything speeds up again and all the hair that probably should have fallen out over the past 12 months or so are finally falling out.
There is no need to worry. It is not because of breastfeeding. There are very low levels of estrogen in a woman’s body after childbirth, and a decreased level of estrogen is one major cause of hair loss. Pregnant women have a heightened level of progesterone and estrogen. When these levels drop suddenly after delivery, this causes their hair to slip into the resting stage. After giving birth, the “resting” hair follicles begin to fall out.
