Can bulimia cause hair loss?

I have depression and took Wellbutrin back in 2004, my hair started falling out like crazy. I stopped taking it and then started taking it again in 2005. I again had hair loss. I stopped taking it again. I have had bulimia also for 21/2 years, but am now recovering. Haven't had bingeing/purging for about 21/2 months, but my hair is still falling out. Will it stop or am I going to go bald? I am only 32 and I am already depressed, I feel like I'm going crazy!! HELP!! Anyone else with this problem? Can bulimia cause hair loss?
Hi RTR

Nutrition is the key to a healthy life. Please educate yourself on it and you're world will change dramatically.

Bulimia

Cause

Nutrient deficiencies (especially zinc), food allergies, and amino acid imbalances can all result from or contribute to bulimia, and therefore should be screened for. In addition, although in both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, the underlying causative factors are commonly believed to be solely due to an obsession with body fat, a fear of being (or becoming) fat, or over-concern with perfectionism and are indeed important.

Natural Cures

Diet: A whole foods diet with regular eating patterns is very important. Also avoid all products containing sugar and white flour, and be sure to obtain sufficient protein sources to adequately nourish the body.

Flower Essences: Various essences can be useful for addressing the underlying emotional and mental states of imbalance and negativity such as fears, perfectionism, manipulative behavior, depression, and anxiety. Crab Apple is particularly useful for coping with obsessive habits relating to body image.

Homeopathy: Calc carb., Ipecac., and Graphites are useful remedies for bulimia.

Nutritional Supplementation: Liquid ionic multi-mineral complex and multivitamin complex supplements can help overcome the extreme vitamin and mineral deficiencies associated with binge and purge eating and overuse of laxatives. Complex amino acids can also assist in balancing blood sugar levels, which helps reduce food cravings.

Alternative Professional Care

If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating and relieving the symptoms of bulimia: Biofeedback Training, Hypnotherapy, Light Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Qigong, and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Best of health to you

it does cause hair loss but it's hard to say if you'll go bald or not, you need to eat plenty of protien...
ive heard that it can cause hair loss,

ruin you teeth and gums and esophogous.
My hair did the same thing. I didn't have bulimia, but I was depressed. I took Lexapro, and my hair started falling out too, but the doctor said most likely it was from lack of vitamins. I had not been eating all that well.
when you are not eating well it can effect things like hair, nails and skin. Also not eating a proper diet can cause more depression. Years ago I did a paper on diet and mental health and how they go hand in hand . Good Luck I hope you start feeling better soon. Talk to your doctor and see if he can try a different medicine that might work better. Are you getting counseling? It does help, You would be surprised who gets depression you are not alone.
Good for you on your recovery, I wish you the best of luck. God bless you. Keep up the good work. Yes is the answer to your question, hair loss and many other things. You should contact a physician and be honest with him/her and they can probably assist you on things that would be beneficial to your health. You may have vitamin deficiencies among other things. You should go and have a health screen and blood work done. Good luck to you on your recovery, you should be so very proud of yourself. God bless
I am 31, and have been bulimic 11 years. I greatly respect and applaud your recovery, as I am all too aware of how impossible that can feel, so well done! Alas, I have no experience with Wellbutrin, apart from witnessing a friend's initial improvement and subsequent meltdown. I do know that bulimia can cause hair loss. It is a traumatic problem for me as well. I do not know of a connection between hair loss and antidepressants, but I have read in multiple sources that Wellbutrin is contraindicated when treating depression where there is a history of bulimia, perhaps even in recovery, as patients are more likely to experience seizures. Do some research and ask your doctor about this. I wish I could recommend an alternative med. but I have not had much success with Prozac, which was approved by the FDA for the treatment of bulimia and OCD in addition to depression.

Here's wishing you a full recovery in every way.

ps...have you tried a good multivitamin? You might also explore metabolic abnormalities..re thyroid, adrenal, etc...
