I want to take St. John's Wort, but online I found some stories people posted that it causes hair loss/thinning (and this is actually listed as one of its side effects).....So can anyone who has taken it for an extended period of time, anyone who knows someone who has had experience with this herb, or any herbalists please comment on this?

It's not at all common, but it has been documented to happen (PMID: 11221494), along with a host of other nasties. Remember, there's no safety regulation or Phase IV monitoring of products like this, so it's -very- hard to tell how likely or prevalent these side effects are. In my experience, I've heard substantially more people get the photosensitivity reaction from this drug than the research would suggest, yet never heard of a case of hair loss. But then it also doesn't seem to be very effective.
Anyway. Keep in mind that St. John's Wort interacts with virtually every medication in existence, including birth control pills. Sometimes quite severely. If you're taking any other medication, you double and triple check with your doctor before taking this drug.St. John's Wort causes hair loss?
I have seen some where that taking St John's Wort over long periods affects the liver.
